1. The Opportunity

Cities are rapidly changing according to social, technological, environmental, political and economic drivers.
Our group focused on promoting innovation in cities to make them hospitable for its visitors.
We explored hospitality through the lenses of welcoming and feeling welcomed i.e. a two-sided relationship and encounters between 'guests' and 'hosts'. As guests in the city of Milan ourselves, one of my colleagues and I deep dived into our own experiences to understand the gaps in the hospitality sector. We found that it was near impossible for us as international students to navigate bureaucratic procedures in a student city like Milan.
International students in Milan; our first hand experience; a perfectly accessible and candid target audience = a great opportunity to investigate further.

2. The Process

We applied different methodologies to dig deeper into our research to understand the needs of international students. We got relevant insights that we used to further our study and find precise opportunity areas to base our service intervention.

i. Focus Group Activities

We conducted a focus group activities in which we wanted to understand what’s the relationship of international students with Milan and the problems they face in the city.

It was immediately clear that one of the main problems they faced were the lengthy bureaucratic procedures they need to complete in order to study and stay in Italy — procedures that are unclear and difficult to find, understand and deal with.

ii. Interviews

We wanted to map the procedural journey of different international students to understand the extra steps that they did over the existing general checklists.

We understood that every country has extra steps that they need to do that require separate guidance. There are also specific things that each students might need guidance with.

iii. Survey

We formulated a survey questionnaire to understand the things that students feel are the most important/ their priorities while carrying out bureaucratic procedures. We received responses from 56 students, and have visualized each of them.

Overall Insights

i. “I don’t want to invest time in learning how to do bureaucratic work and I want to get it done quickly, all the process is very scattered and unorganized but I would invest time in the paperwork if there’s easy access to information.”
Slate, California (Student at Politecnico)

ii. Error prevention and time-saving are very important for students.

iii. Each country has a unique set of procedures that need to be taken care of over the regular bureaucratic procedures.
